The VMWS annual Literary Event is on again!

Join us at the East Melbourne Library on August 17th for a morning of literary inspiration. We are very excited to be joined by doctors and authors Dr Leah Kaminsky and Dr Melanie Cheng.

Each author will speak for about an hour about their books, how and why they’ve decided to become an author, how this links in with their career, how they organise their work-life balance, other out-of-work interests/passions and so forth. Be inspired and empowered by their stories!

You will also have the opportunity to buy their books on the day, or bring your own copies to have them signed!

Dr Leah Kaminsky

Dr Leah Kaminsky is not only a well-respected GP of 17 years, but an award winning author. Having first pursued her love of writing professionally in 1989, Dr Kaminsky has gone from strength to strength with her writing.  Her accolades as a prize winning author include

• The Waiting Room: awarded the prestigious Voss Literary Prize in 2016, shortlisted for The Asher Award in 2017 and shortlisted for the William–Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition in 2013
• The Hollow Bones: awarded the Griffith Review Contributor’s Circle Award in 2016, shortlisted for the Churchill Trust Fellowship and additionally won a Bundanon Artist-in-Residence Fellowship in 2017

Dr Melanie Cheng

Dr Melanie Cheng is an accomplished award-winning author, mother and Melbourne GP. After attending a gathering held by the Creative Doctors Network, Dr Cheng realised her passion for writing. Since that time, she has been able to draw on inspiration from her work as a GP and feed it into her literary work. That gathering proved to be an award-winning choice.

In 2018, Dr Cheng won the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for her series of short stories, titled ‘Australia Day’. Her writing has been featured in The Age, The Weekend Australian, SBS Online, Meanjin, Overland, Griffith Review, Sleepers Almanac, The Bridport Prize Anthology, Lascaux Review, Visible Ink, The Victorian Writer and Seizure.
