VMWS is committed to advocate for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people especially women and children.
Here’s some initiatives that we have undertaken to to close the gap:
-
AFMW Bursary
As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Australian Federation of Medical awarded the Inaugural AFMW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Purple Bush Leaves Medicine Bursary.
-
Reconciliation Action Plan
AFMW and VMWS have newly established a Reconciliation Action Plan working group to to provide guidance around cultural safety and incorporate the voice of the First Nation’s people in our activities.
The Victorian Medical Women’s Society wholeheartedly supports the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ and proudly acknowledges and celebrates Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their connection to Country. The VMWS wishes to listen to and be guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples on issues that their Communities raise and how the Society can best provide support. The VMWS strives for inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in our membership and Executive Committee, and in the spirit of self-determination and deep respect, the VMWS is also seeking Indigenous Australian representation at the Executive Committee level to guide the Society on Indigenous matters.
