Stories are important in human culture. They teach essential lessons, give us perspective on our own lives and help us connect.
In the VMWS, we are fortunate to have a long line of creative and empowered women. These women, all unique individuals with their own life stories and beliefs, have bonded together with the shared goal of advocating for women in the medical and in the broader communities.
There is immense importance in keeping these stories alive in the memory of the present generation and those to follow.
Some current goals:
- To continue adding material to our current archives located at The State Library of Victoria (including photos, letters, articles, video and audio media)
- To digitise current archives and make them available online
- To investigate online archive repository services at the National Library of Australia, so that material is easily accessible to all members of the public
- To develop an indexing system to facilitate searches for material
- To collaborate with other historical and archive services, so that pooled material may be possible and legal permissions granted
- To share stories highlighted in archive material in the form of newsletter articles and research papers
The VMWS encourages any members enthusiastic about being involved in developing the Society’s historical archives to contact Dr Anne Stanaway.
