President’s Message December 2020

It is a privilege and an honour to be the next President of VMWS. I have been a member of VMWS since I was a medical student, and have grown up, if you will, in the midst of empowering, learned, and awe-inspiring medical women.

Through my experiences gleaned from my involvement with VMWS, as well as that in my own career, from starting out as a surgical trainee to now pursuing intensive care medicine, I have come to understand just how important it is to have a feminine voice in medicine. I am learning how to use my voice effectively, advocating for others as well as speaking up for myself as a doctor-in-training and as a woman in medicine.

We are almost done with finalising our committee for the next year and Im looking forward to working with what I know to be an amazing group of medical women. Were all excited to carry on the work that our predecessors have been doing and were keen to have more voices join the conversation!

I urge you to become involved in VMWS. There is so much potential – in personal growth, lifelong friendship and support, and in the ability to contribute on a local, national and international scale. Reach out to us via our contact page on our website or via Facebook and Twitter!

In other news, Im trying to squeeze in some last-minute, not-quite-panicky (theres still time, right?!) Xmas shopping and listening to Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell on my drive to and from work – a rather eye-opening book, if I do say so myself. If youre an opinionated reader like I am, find me on Twitter @heymadhura and tell me what you think! Wishing you a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to growing with all of you in 2021!

Warmest regards,
Madhura
